During my first meeting with the Roosevelt
Island Resident’s Association, a safety issue
was brought to my attention by one of the
residents. She asked me to take a look at the
pedestrian activity at the Island Turn-around on
Main St. Her concern was that some of the
pedestrians were walking diagonally across the
street without using the crosswalks or
sidewalks.
Sure enough, she was right. Not only were
pedestrians not using the crosswalks and
sidewalks, but they were actually walking in the
street. I even saw citizens in wheelchairs
unsafely proceeding in the street among motor
vehicles.
I
met with the Director of Engineering and a new
constructed turn-around island has been
constructed. Citizens of Roosevelt Island
traveling from the Subway or Tram can now cross
Main St., diagonally, by utilizing the new
sidewalk.
Be
advised that new crosswalks will soon be painted
and the Stop Sign will be moved to better serve
that intersection. Please remember to cross
carefully and to utilize the crosswalks and
sidewalks. Thank you.
