On Thursday November
18th, the Public Safety Department hosted a
Crime Prevention Summit as part of their
Community Outreach Initiative. The event
took place at 546 Main Street in the Senior
Center with approximately 40 people in
attendance, including RIOC Board Member
Howard Polivy and his wife, Ellen.
The Summit began with
a few words from Ms. Linda Jones-Janneh,
Community Coordinator from the Office of
Community Affairs of the Manhattan District
Attorney's Office. Ms. Jones-Janneh
explained to those present that the new
Manhattan DA, Cyrus Vance, wants his office
to have better communication with the
Roosevelt Island Community. She elaborated
on topics including Domestic/Elderly
violence and what happens to cases after the
initial arrest. She even fielded a few
questions.
Deputy Director, Rene
Bryan and Officer Kionna Wray proceeded to
cover topics such as: proper locks and the
use of multi lock systems; the use of the
elevators when strangers are involved;
Con-games in person or by the telephone,
with the reminder that "People are not
giving money away... if it's too good to be
true, it probably isn't."
Other topics covered
dealt with: how to avoid being a victim of a
pick-pocket; the proper way to carry a
pocket-book/purse; using the ATM; answering
the door for maintenance, Fed Ex, UPS. The
Seniors were instructed to check for ID.
They were also instructed to call the
Management Office to verify or PSD if they
felt unsure.
Lastly, they were
advised about walking down the street. Being
aware of taking shortcuts and sticking to
the main road was emphasized. They realized
that the more populated and well lit the
area - the better.
The evening was
highlighted with a demonstration by Officer
Wray, who is a black belt in Judo. A
question/Answer period followed, along with
Refreshments. All in attendance seemed
pleased and thanked our Department for the
valuable information.
Thank you to all that
attended.
